I'm ashamed that guy is from my state. Makes me want to enter the military as quickly as possible so I can move away from here.

The rampant ignorance can indeed become frustrating.

As an irrelevant aside, I horribly misread the title of this thread: Helen Keller tries to ban cousin marriage again.

I thought it said Helen Keller too!! haha

Fair?  There's no such thing as "fair" in politics.  That's the way every legislature in the U.S. works (including the federal congress).  It's why parties matter so incredibly much and why we should be glad we only have two

The party in control decides what committees will exist, who will chair them, what their membership makeup will be, and ultimately, what bills will make it out of committee for vote on the floor.  The Speaker appoints people he can count on as committee chairs so really, the Speaker sets the whole agenda; in the Senate, it's the majority leader.  In truth, the Senate Majority Leader of the US Senate is more powerful than the President.  He and the Speaker of the House are responsible for everything the government does or fails to do.  His or her party peers are indirectly responsible because they voted for that person (and we vote for them individually).

Anyway, in this case, I'm sure he's been convinced by Mr. Heller that its to "protect the children" and I'm sure he means well... he's just sadly misinformed and Mr. Heller apparently has a little charisma and a good friendship with him.  What we need to do is get Mr. Vallario to realize that he has been given erroneous information and is about to make a serious mistake based more on discrimination than any solid facts.  Given his stand on homosexual marriage, I would be mildly surprised if he didn't change his mind when he recognizes the truth.

I find it funny how MANY people support gay rights but think cousin marriage is wrong and nasty. Hypocritical much?

The bible CLEARLY condenms it!

Congratulations. Would've been a real shame having that bill passed.

People play genetic roulette more by smoking, drinking, and doing drugs during pregnancy; than by marrying a cousin. Why don't they make bills that would force drug addicts to become sterile? What the bloody hades? Who elects these morons?

Skinner v. Oklahoma ended laws requiring sterilization of criminals, drug addicts, etc., and made clear that marriage is a fundamental right and important to the preservation of society.  That same court case along with Loving v. Virginia make a good case against banning cousin marriage but it's never been challenged on that basis.  Any attempt to use Lawrence v. Texas would be a dismal failure but I believe these other two cases have merit.

So true elevengirl..I have a neice with 4 children that were all conceived and carried while she was using Meth and Heroin. She has not been forced to get her tubes tied yet..she's still fertile! On the flip side..I, who got pregnant by my cousin, made sure I was not even around anyone smoking, didn't even take morning sickness pills, etc..You tell me..which baby is more at risk?? These people really need to get their stats, or whatever, from the proper sources.

These people gets their "facts" by having lies being fed to them because they are too lazy to make some reasearch instead on the subject.

Marriage is a fundamental right eh....unless you are cousins apparently. Seems like they care more about protecting the rights of drug addicts, and criminals, then people that I consider very normal, tax paying, well adjusted adults, who just happened to fall for their cousin. (facepalm) what a dumb world we live in sometimes.....yeah I don't understand this either.
