I can't keep up with it either. Now the search engines and html5 want you to label every little piece of data in on a page. They have introduced a lot more tags. Also with the advent of the mobile devices, you are expected to create one webpage that can display across all devices (responsive theme).

I'm doing a new website and taking it slow so that I get it right. I'm trying to use Bootstrap

Very nicely done!  I've started seeing this type of stuff showing up on high-dollar site designs in the past year.  Hello HTML5!  Of course, JavaScript and pre-built libraries (like JQuery) that make full use of the DOM are very helpful starting points.  Way beyond anything I could do right now.  My work tends to focus more on security these days.  I see new toys and think, "ooh, shiny!  I wonder what I can make it do that they didn't intend or what it would take to break it!?!"
